We often endearingly refer to our home as 'the factory' because, for 25 years, that is what it was.
At its height, the Laminations surfboard factory produced thousands of surfboards a year from this building. In the end, even those numbers weren't enough to compete with the rise of overseas super factories.
Today we're doing things differently. We aren't trying to compete with brands producing surfboards for the masses. We craft custom boards for individual surfers.
As part of our commitment to quality, the environment and building a sustainable business, we are limiting production to just 300 boards a year.
Building less than one board a day gives us time to take pride in what we do, to focus on quality over quantity and to give your boards the attention they deserve.
Our guest residencies are a chance for you to get custom boards direct from the hands of the worlds most exciting shapers.
These boards are shaped by your chosen shaper here at Open. We don't (and never will) sell ghost shaped boards.
Every shaper we host is invited because of their skills/reputation as a surfer/shaper and because they share our value of quality over quantity.
Shaping the board is only the start.
Less celebrated but no less important are people who bring your board to life.
The laminator who glasses your board ensures the colour, weight and strength are what you want.
The finisher who sands your board ensures the shapers vision for rails and channels are translated to the final product.
We're lucky to work with some of the best craftsmen in the UK. The factory is led by Ollie Cooper a perfectionist who shares our vision to make boards that last / customers cherish.
